Mondo Desperado by Patrick McCabe.

Had really enjoyed the Butcher Boy. this one is a collection of short stories. so far, so good. he's got this everyday irish way of writing. very real, yet quite mad stories.

Just finished Children of Men, was so appalling it took me about 3 months to slog through it. Never read a P.D. James before, won't be doing so again.

although not finished with the tedious mccabe one (20 pages left of the last short story, the forbidden love of noreen tiernan, some irish nurse turning lesbos in london), i've started re-reading The chess player by Stefan Zweig.
i never re-read a book. there are too many unread. but wishing to offer this one to someone "special", so making sure it is as good as i remember it.
anyone does that? rereading a book? do you actually get something different out of it?

Yeah I re-read books all the time. There's something nice about the familiarity, have to leave it for a year or so in between though.

well, i've left 20 years in between the first and that second reading so in terms of story, i don't remember that many details. i just remember the pleasure of reading it.

and no rocky, it's not the cop. i said i don't do cops. the special one is probably more of an anarchist than anything else. Ni Dieu ni loi (no gods no laws).

I read a few books on holidays ... I'd recommend them all, alloqwing for the different subject matter.

'Easy Riders, Raging Bull', Peter Bliskard.
Account of the players who changed Hollywood in the 70's. Taking the power from the Producers/studios & placing it in the Directors hands. A must for cinephiles.

''The Greatest Game Ever Played', Mark Frost.
An account of the 1913 US Open ... A fantasic read for fans of golf.

'Child 44', Tom Rob Smith.
A Cold War thriller about a russian soldier who becomes disillisuioned in the State he loves, as he searches for a child murder that the State denys exists. A debut novel that was a real page turner, I just wanted to keep reading on.
"The band that is now the core of BELL X1 but at the time had a lead singer called Damien Rice - and what became of them all - sank into obscurity no doubt!" Dan Hegarty, 2FM 2006 (with tongue firmly in cheek)
