Hey guys,

Given the success of finding top ear phones by consulting you fine people a few months ago, I've now decided i need a new camera.
I'm not the greatest at knowing whats a decent camera to get apart from knowing the very basics. If any of yous can shed some light and post some links to reasonably priced cameras (I'M A STUDENT) that are decent i'd be very grateful. Looking for about 10 megapixels or so.

Cheers
Sean

Pixmania.ie is a decent site, helpful, & decent prices.

You need to figure out what it use going to be, & what are your priorities ...

The 2 I have, I have for different needs.

An Ultra Compact is grand as a 'point & click' that fits nicely into you pocket. Its hand for weddings/partys/nights out ... The kind of thing that ends up on facebook.

For gigs, I use a High Zoom, for the obvious reasons. I stayed away from SLRs as they are too bulky to sneak into a venue/hide in a bag.

I have a Nikon D70s ..... great camera but a bit bulky as Mully mentioned

I also have this ... great bit of kit... wide angle lens, and takes HD video ..... you'll find it hard to beat these prices too.... 350 euros in any shops ive seen it in, in Ireland.

I'm not sure what models I have, as I don't have them with me.

bought a Nikon Coolpix S610 for 180 euros (in france. you could order through the fnac.com site if it's more expensive here). nice large screen considering it's a pretty slim camera. very nice quality of pictures. easy to use. a good birthday buy, so it was...

1. What's your budget?
2. What are you shooting? - If you plan on shooting gigs, can you get your camera into your regularly visited venues? Not sure about Ireland/UK but most venues here don't allow D-SLRs unless you have a photo pass, so with that in mind, if you don't have access to photo passes, I'd narrow your search down to compact cameras.
3. What do you need your camera to do? How important is zoom to you? Do you need manual operation capabilities (set your own shutter speed/be able to manual focus)? How important is video? Do you need HD video capabilities?
4. What is your output? Are you blogging with these pictures and all that your readers will see is a 3"x3" image on their monitor? Or are you freelancing for the band and they may require to enlarge a few images for promotional purposes?

I find that once you've answered these questions, it'll help narrow down your search, and then maybe we could help suggest brands/models from your requirements. :)

I haven't had a problem with my DSLR in any of the smaller venues here.

Hi Sean,

I also found pixmania very good but have recently discovered warehouseexpress.co.uk, and found them even better. Probably depending on what you´re looking for. I have a canon 450D and am very happy with it but it´s a bit pricy. Are you looking for an SLR or not? Big difference I suppose. Hope this helps!

Hey guys,
Apologies for the delay but thanks for the responses. Should have mentioned in my other post what i'm looking for in a cam- my bad.
So basically, i'm pretty amateur with cameras. Looking for a digital cam thats worth about £120-130 but if theres a quality one for an extra£15 or whatever that you think is good let me know!
I'll be using it for a wide range of things such as university and fieldtrips, travels, nights out, friends family- general social get togethers.
Zoom is important I reckon, but I've had cameras before with zoom and the picture is distorted so it just looks terrible- may as well not have a zoom if the quality of the picture is poor if you do zoom. Not too pushed on HD, video is required yes.
Pigography- nothing too technical like using it for promotional purposes! the most will be used for essays, and general memories just by saving them onto my computer.

Hope this narrows it down, and once again thanks a million for the help.

heres a few that caught my eye:

i've a nikon coolpix too (see my previous post) and i'm very happy with it. i've a mate (a professional photographer) who had a look at it, and he was well impressed with the quality of the pictures and of the overall camera. A good buy that was recommended by the guy in the shop. He thought it was the best quality/price value out of the many they had.
